Blackthunda77's 80 Gal Rimless To 195 Gal Custom Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Man its been a while. House has been getting alot of attention from me thus far so the tank projects have been lacking. Now that its too hot to work outside on the weekends, my larger construction projects will be put on hold till the weather cools down. Till then, hopefully the tank will finally start getting completed.

For this update, i have finally completed the floating canopy. Just have to install it. I really like how the finish came out. 2 coats of primer with sanding in between. Then 3-4 coats of indoor latex paint in a semi gloss finish. Gives just the right amount of gloss. I originally wanted to go with the ultra high gloss, like an epoxy resin, but im happy with the result i got with the semi gloss. I used regular cut pine board from home depot, some wood filler, and primer, then sprayed it with my spray gun and im pretty happy with the smoothness of the finish.

On a side note, fish are doing great, coral are doing OK. Lack of water changes will probably help once i get my maintenance back in gear. My Ruby Red Scooter Blenny pair have been courting and i believe they are spawning as well. Slowly going up the water column together and then jetting back down to the substrate. I have some pics of them doing it i have to get off my camera and post up here.

cmon over. Hopefully this weekend my uncle will come through with the panels for the siding and the doors of the stand. Kinda tired of looking at the guts of the tank and it looking "unfinished"

Bumping back up a REALLY old thread. With work on the house, having a new baby boy, and basically just "life", i havent had much time to focus on the tank. And due to that the tank kinda went downhill. Tank has gone through a bout of GHA which was a PAIN to get rid of. I eventually acid washed all my rock and started fresh. Lost most of my coral and some fish. Was about ready to throw in the towel but couldnt let myself get to that. Im just going to add some more recent pics of me rebooting the tank.

started to finish the stand and doors.

These are the rocks after the acid bath. You can see the rock the anemone is on, all the rocks were basically that bad....yea, talk about slacking.

These are basically the corals that survived.

And this is the current issue im dealing with...My no3 is stuck at around 20. Even with weekly water changes and reduced feedings.

I have since started carbon dosing, but im having a tough time. I followed th nopox directions, but i constantly get bacterial blooms with thier dosage. I have dropped the dosage to about 1/3 of what they recommend for my system size.

I have also upgraded a key piece of equipment...

Sorry to read about your tank issues and the problems. But then life has a way of doing that. I think I have less 'free time' now that I'm retired than I did when I worked a 40 hour week!

The tank is coming along nice and there are some very cool looking frags getting started. The new skimmer should help some. I don't carbon dose, so I'm no help there.

Seems like I'm starting to see an ever so slight down tick in nitrates.

I guess I seem to update this thread every two years, lol. However, with trying to be a little more involved with the club I figured I'd try to post an update. I post pics from time to time on the SWFMAS FB page. But theres not many of us using it at the moment.

Thanks. Need to add some more colors to that clam garden. They are considered gold from ORA, but I think that's a fancy word for brown. Lol. I the moment I have np scans. I think you are referring to the Raptors peace favia. As for the anemone, it's a huge magnifica/Ritteri. Had it for maybe 6-7 years now.

First sps order from live aquaria divers den. Got held up in shipping an extra day. Came in a little more pale than the pic they advertised, but some of the color is still there. Kind of did it as a test to see what the quality is. We shall see if it colors up.0b90a00628a16bedbf8c2eb56c6ce9fc.jpg

Thanks. Tank has seemed to hit its stride parameter wise about a year ago. Sometime after irma. Whatever coral i still had left started to rebound and show some growth. So I've been slowly trying to add to the livestock.
