March 21, 2020 Meeting

Recommended Posts

Our March meeting will be Saturday, March 21 at Estero Community Center.  We will have a guest speaker, Matt Seguin from Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota.  Meeting will begin at 3 pm

Originally from the Chicago suburbs, Matt Seguin graduated from UF and UCF with degrees in wildlife ecology and conservation and biology.  He worked at Discovery Cove, Sea World, and Brookfield Zoo before joining the team at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in June 2008. His primary duty is overseeing the health/husbandry of the fish and invertebrate collection. Matt works closely with the veterinary staff to maintain biosecurity within the aquarium, ensuring that all animals go through proper quarantine treatments before being added to the collection. He also serves as the registrar for the aquarium, securing proper permits and maintaining accurate physical and digital records of the animals in the collection. Outside of Mote, Matt is an Adjunct Professor at the Ringling College of Art and Design, teaching Environmental Science and Biodiversity. He also serves on the Wildlife Conservation Committee for AZA and volunteers on the Advisory Committee and is the webmaster for the Regional Aquatics Workshop (rawconference.org).

Matt will be speaking about the typical quarantine process as well as fish and invertebrate health and welfare management at Mote Aquarium.  He will also speak on the importance of maintaining biosecurity, collection planning, and good record keeping.

Mote is closing after tomorrow.  I have talked to our guest speaker and we are going to postpone this meeting until April or May.  Will reschedule in a couple weeks after things settle down.
