We have a few newer stores around here, and some of them would like some feedback from customers - What would you like to see, what do you dislike about stores, what turns you on, and what is a turn off for you in terms of your local store visits. If you wouldn't mind - let's give the stores some ideas of what we think will make them better, and will make us keep shopping. And please don't make this a bash thread: Contrary to popular believe, most, if not all of our local stores want to work with us - they don't want to just sell us an item, but they like to establish a relationship with us. And out of personal experience - Most of them will listen, and make improvements. The local stores are stepping up their game. We have over 200 members on this site now - Many of our LFS employees & owners are reading our site. __________________

Good thread... First, I'd

First, I'd like to say, support your local fish store! We are blessed with an array of excellent stores and the owners are very accessible and helpful. I have only rarely ever found a better deal online.
I haven't visited "Some Things Fishy" yet (the old Buy Fish Now/Blue Ocean). Alexander (my son and partner in reef-keeping) knows the most about all the LFS, but here is my opinion:
Eric and Dustin at Ocean Environments seem to know the most about technical issues and tank-building. They have the most practical advice on high-end equipment and custom building. Also, they seem to be able to pull my tank out of trouble when issues arise and others are confused. Their experience is obvious and un-matched, and I can't say enough about the excellent service they have given me. Their livestock is healthy and I haven't had any sudden deaths from fish or coral that I have purchased there.
Jeovani at Artistik is the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. He probably has the most consistently healthy livestock, and he is always willing to special-order for me and give me amazing prices (Jeo - the Mystery Wrasse is doing great!) His dry goods are well-stocked. He probably has the best fish, but the award for coral frags goes to....... Boardroom.
Boardroom has been here for a long time as well. Their coral selection is always superior, and they tend to offer the most colorful specimens. They also have a lot of mother colonies, so if you see one you like, it's just a matter of time before a frag of it will be for sale. The store is a bit crowded, but that's probably because they are so well-stocked. I have had mixed success with their fish, but you never know if it's them or me. Just because a fish dies doesn't mean it came to the tank un-healthy.
Pet-owners-warehouse in Port Charlotte is newly owned and re-modeled (owner - Ray). They have far-and-away the best deals on salt (those huge buckets of Instant Ocean for less than $30.00 is an example). Their fish selection is unrivaled, frequently selling 50 different species at a time. However, do not buy their fish! They use only tap water and there is obvious Ich in their tanks. This place is NOT the place for livestock. That being said, they have a large selection of soft corals (which I have no interest in so can't comment on the health). They also have a huge fresh-water/pond section, and an array of fresh and frozen foods. If interested, they are probably the best store around for bird supplies (I have a parrot).
I haven't been to the store in Cape Coral or Naples. I used to love "Buy Fish Now" when Fernando ran it. But it went downhill with Mike and I don't know what will happen with it next. Back then, they were the place for SPS, so we'll see. Fernando is the most knowledgeable resource for info on coral. He can speciate anything, and has the most scientific knowledge about coral. He is also a magician when it comes to design and plumbing. He is working at PetCo next to Barnes and Noble (Daniels and 41), so if you have any questions, he is still reachable
I hope this is a good first response to this thread. It will be interesting to see what other SWFMAS members think.
Yours in Reef-keeping,
Jay
