ok .. here we go again. same story - different pest. This time we have: IF YOU PICKED UP CORALS FROM ME @ THE AUCTION LAST MONTH, PLEASE INSPECT AND QT YOUR CORALS/rock ASAP. They must have laid eggs & matured just a few days ago, for the past 2-3 days i've been noticing parts of my caps dying overnight, when checking tonight, there were about 20 of them that i pulled out. EVERY one of my caps had them on, underneath, and around. We noticed them tonight at lights out - they are VERY small, almost don't notice them ... size of a pin head or 2. This is/was fun. we're about
Submitted by wiszmaster on Sun, 2008-04-20 04:24.This is/was fun. we're about 75% finished. have LOTS of frags. most of my cap colonies have been reduced to frags. Some may not make it at all. Cristina freshwater dipped 1 rock & forgot about it for about 10-15 minutes ... ouch. needless to day that monti doesn't look like it will be around anymore. Some of my other monties have also been munched on. Mostly the caps though.

Submitted by Cristina_j on Sun, 2008-04-20 12:53.Yeah, last night sucked, and the worst part was, as I was laying down to finally go to sleep at 6am this morning...my alarm went off cause we were supposed to be getting up to go to Mote...I'll post pics of us at like 3:30 where we were already close to two hours into it...needless to say, we had another 2 and a half hours to go until we went to bed.

Submitted by Dawn on Mon, 2008-04-21 08:47.sorry you had such a bad time. Are you sure you are the spreader, and that it was at the auction- could you have gotten an infected frag from someone else? It goes back to the old "quarantine everything", but few of us, including myself, do.
I believe I may have gotten
Submitted by wiszmaster on Mon, 2008-04-21 10:10.I believe I may have gotten them through the auction, HOWEVER I am not certain. I'd rather be on the safe side, and let people knwo that I do have it ATM, and if they got anything form me within the past 90 days ... check your corals. Better safe than sorry.
I will have to start QTing now ... this isn't my first time of introducing something unwanted into my tank ... and it's getting old. This wiped out just about my entire montipora collection. Only thing that got somewhat spared is my digitata.
I should've QT'd ... no ifs/buts about it. My fault, and I apologize if I did spread it to anybody else.
BTW .. freshwater dips will not solve this, or kill them. You will end up killing other corals, rather than the nudis.
Here is a more natural control/prevent setup:

Submitted by Aquaman on Mon, 2008-04-21 14:19.Just saw this, and I am anxious to get home and make sure my Montiporas are ok. Marco I did just read an article on controlling these nudibranchs with a flatworm remedy I believe. The author had very good success with using the remedy as a dip and the product supposedly was "reef safe" so you might be able to do a whole tank treatment. I'll check the article and post again later with the name of the product if I think it will be helpful.

I found the article. It was
Submitted by Aquaman on Mon, 2008-04-21 18:25.I found the article. It was actually for a zoanthid eating nudibranch. The author was dipping corals or rock to get rid of flatworms with Salifert's flatworm exit and noticed it killed all the nudibranchs too. He states that it is reef safe, and is providing 100% control.
Not sure if you would see the same results on montipora eating nudibranchs but it might be worth a try if you find them still there. The article was in Reef Hobbyist magazine, which I believe was literature I got at the open house.
Although I am not sure if any of the corals I got at the auction came from you, I believe one or two might have, and so far my tank looks clean, the montis are all healthy. You might check the auction list to see if I did buy something you sold, it might give you peace of mind that the infestation did not come from you or get spread by you. Good luck with it.

hey just a note to let you
Submitted by aquabry1060 on Tue, 2008-04-22 11:07.hey just a note to let you know when using flatworm exit it is totally reef safe (the product) however the toxins released by some nudibranches and especially flat worms when they die is very toxic. the best way is to use it as a dip and ensure all dead critters are cleared from the rock before returning it to the tank, if you do decide to treat the entire tank only turn off prot skimmer and uv sterilizer, remove carbon for 1 hr giving time for the product to do its thing then turn on both and quadruple your corbon or add 4x's the perscribed dose if you dont use, keep carbon in for at least 4 days after treatment and you should be good to go
oh by the way I have not expirienced any hitchhikers on anything i got from the auction and all are doing fantastic, thanks to all!!
Well I found them in my tank
Submitted by Cristina_j on Tue, 2008-04-22 16:54.Well I found them in my tank today.... :( I went on a coral saving adventure right after the event when we were getting ready to loose some stuff due to the nitrate spike...well I pulled over numerous caps & digi's from Marco's tank...I still have two Cap colonies in my tank, thought they were doing ok, but today I noticed 3 large suckers on the back of one that isn't attached to anything. this sucks...Now I'm watching my tank like a hawk and am ready to remove them as I find them... Lucky for me I don't have much montipora in my tank...Just that the digi's and the one cap that is mine are all doing so well... :(

Submitted by Cristina_j on Thu, 2008-04-24 19:16.Well I went to the new Reef Center in Ft. Myers (Old Glass Ocean)...they had a bunch of hawaiian six line wrasses...I've heard that they are supposed to help eat the nudi's...but knowing me I just bought three fish so they'll pester everything else in our tanks and leave the pests alone.... I took more pictures of the "DEATH" in the tank, just need to upload and get them posted on here.

Steve, We will definately be
Submitted by Cristina_j on Fri, 2008-04-25 15:21.Steve,
We will definately be around this weekend, give us a call if your in the area and want to stop by...hopefully we will be able to put all the clutter that is in the room upstairs now, and finish painting. I put the first coat on today, not too sure it needs a second, but knowing Marco, we'll be putting one up there anyways.. Or should I say he will be doing it....I did the first one by myself...he can do the second one by himself...
I haven't seen the wrasse I put into Marco's tank yet today, and my fairy wrasse is giving my 6 line a hell of a time, the sixline out in the sump is doing just fine, as there is only a tang, some chromis, and a cucumber out there...nothing really to piss it off too much...
