I would say it may be Illegal to collect sand I was trying to look online but could not find a definite answer. I know a few years ago there was a big beach reclamation program where they added sand to the beaches so they may be a little sensitive to someone taking sand.
IMHO-Your best bet is to check on someone breaking down a tank see if you can relieve them of their sand.

Good point... Im not sure how many lbs I am looking for, I am gonna make about 70pds of live rock but, Im sure the sand is a small part of that weight.

I know that sanibel has a city ordinance that makes taking their beachsand illegal. They have busted people off ebay for selling sanibels sand.

I would not recommend beach sand. It has way too much silica in it. Brown diatom algae loves silica. I would try calling some of the mines. When they crush the limestone and wash it, they get a product they call "screenings" This is basically a very coarse sand that is almost entirely limestone based.

I thought limestone isnt good for the tank? We need to get a thread going where people have found good sand and the hardware stores. I will start one.
