  1. Below is the proposed meeting schedule for 2019. As meeting topics and dates are confirmed, we will highlight them in green. January 19 – Field Trip to Mote Aquarium in Sarasota March 2 - Field Trip to Florida Aquaculture facility in Apollo Beach March 30 – James Fatherree - Aquarium Photography in Estero April 27 – Poker Run. Stops to include JoeFish Aquatics, Saltwater Solutions, Barrier Reef May 25 - Marc Levenson (aka melev) - Aquarium Plumbing in Estero June 22-23 – Keys Field Trip July 20 – Public BOD Meeting & Guest Speaker in Estero August 17 - Field Trip to Boyd Enterprises in Plantation September 21- Guest speaker, workshop, or panel discussion October 20 – Frag Auction at Riverside Community Center in Fort Myers November 16 – Build Your Own Rock Workshop at Jeff's in Lehigh December 7 – Holiday Party We are open to suggestions for future meetings.   2. Our April meeting will be Saturday, April 27. This meeting will consist of a Poker Run with some of our LFS. This will consist of handing out cards at each stop and the high hand winning prizes. The schedule is below (with the rules below that) 9:45 am - Meet in parking lot at Joefish Aquatics to get first deal of cards 10:00 am - JoeFish Aquatics - 16205 S. Tamiami Trail, Ste 4, Fort Myers 11:00 am - High Hand prize drawn at JoeFish Aquatics - Prize is a custom in the tank/sump acrylic frag rack. Give Joe the dimension and he will make it for you. Maximum size for this rack is 24-inches 11:45 am - Lunch at Buffalo Chips on Old US 41 in Bonita Springs (or other area restaurant - your choice.....I'm writing this and that is where I am going) 1:00 pm - Saltwater Solutions - 11100 Bonita Beach Road, Ste 104, Bonita Springs 2:00 pm - High Hand prize drawn at Saltwater Solutions - prize is the aquacultured Tridacna maxima clam pictured below 2:45 pm - The Barrier Reef - 13040 Livingston Road, Unit 8, Naples 3:45 pm - High Hand prize drawn at The Barrier Reef - Prize is a Cynurina coral (actual coral in pictures below) 4:30 pm - BBQ at John aka blackthunda77's house in Golden Gate. There will be a final high hand drawing at 5 pm with whatever cards you have left. Grand prize is two full conference passes to MACNA 2019. Other prizes (Chemipure, power heads, Tshirts, etc.) will be given out until we run out of prizes or cards. Poker Run Rules You must be a paid member of SWFMAS* to participate in the poker run prizes (not paid, you are still welcome to tag along, or you can join in advance through the website or in person the morning of the run) *One hand/set of cards per membership. Seven cards will be given out at the first stop with three cards given out at each additional stop. If you make purchases at a given stop, you will be eligible to receive additional cards as outlined below. (If you miss the first stop, you can still get your three cards plus purchases at whatever stop you join the Poker Run) If you make a purchase at a given store, you will receive one extra card. For each additional $50 in value of your purchase(s), you will receive an additional card (Ex. $5 purchase = 1 extra card. $51 to $100 = 2 extra cards. $101 to $150 purchase = 3 extra cards...and so on). Obviously, purchases must be made prior to the drawing for the high hand at that given store. Pick you best five cards for your hand. Winner will turn in the winning hand (but can keep any extra cards for the next stop). Losers can keep their cards for the next stop. At each additional stop, you will be given three more cards plus extra cards for purchases as outlined in #3 above. Repeat items #4 and #5 until we run out of stops and prizes. BBQ - RSVP and Side Dishes The BBQ is a bring a dish event. SWFMAS will cover meats, bread, plates, utensils and drinks - SWFMAS members will bring a side dish or a desert. Please post up how many will be in your party and what side dish you will bring. We will update below so you can see what people are bringing. Please RSVP by Thursday, April 25, 5 pm so we can get a head count to go grocery shopping! Jeff (jdhuyvetter) - Whatever is missing (I do the grocery shopping for the club.   3. For the March meeting we will be hosting guest speaker James Fatherree who will be presenting the topic of Aquarium Photography. March 30th, 2019 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm Estero Community Park Recreation Center Room 103A 9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd. Estero, FL ‎ 33928 Entry fee: $5 for General Public; Free for SWFMAS club members Annual memberships available on-site. James Fatherree is a professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida, and has been a reef aquarist and diver for over twenty-five years. He also worked for an aquarium livestock collector and wholesaler, managed a large retail aquarium shop, and operated his own aquarium installation and maintenance business in the past. James has also been a writer and photographer for Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine since 1999, has regularly contributed to other aquarium and dive magazines, and has authored several marine aquarium books, including Giant Clams in the Sea and the Aquarium. James will be will be giving a presentation on aquarium photography, and will cover the key aspects of getting the most from digital cameras and taking great pictures.
  4. Our January meeting will be a field trip to Mote Marine Aquarium and Laboratory in Sarasota. We will meet at the aquarium at 9:30 am on Saturday, January 19th. 1600 Ken Thompson Pkwy., Sarasota, FL 34236 We will be getting a behind the scenes tour, so please be on time. Link to the aquarium website is: http://mote.org/ Group Rates: (We need a minimum of 10 people going to qualify for group rates) Adults (13 & older): $19Youth (age 3-12): $16 If you are interested in going sign up here! (not required, but appreciated) Please also post if you want to car pool in this thread.
  5. Our November meeting will be Saturday, November 18 at 2:30 pm at the Estero Community Park (9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd. Estero, FL 33928) under the North Pavilion next to the Community Center. Our meeting will be a frag demo followed by a BBQ/cookout. We will be demonstrating fragging techniques using bone cutters, scissors, band saw, dremel tool, razor blades and rubber bands (yes, you can frag with a rubber band). We will also discuss several frag mounting techniques. Corals to be fragged are: Leather Favia/Favites Acropora Scroll Star Polyps Palythoas Gorgonians Trumpets Anything you bring and need help with. Note that if you bring a coral for fragging, please bring a separate container of clean saltwater to transport your coral back home. Not good to take it back in the water it was fragged in. Our semi annual Board of Directors Meeting will precede the November monthly meeting and will begin at 1:00 pm in the Recreation Center at the Estero Community Park. All are welcome to attend. As with all our BBQ's, club will provide meats, buns and drinks. The rest is bring a side. Free for paid club members and $5 for everyone else.   6. Our August meeting will be a trip to Hollywood Beach (300 Connecticut St, Hollywood, FL 33019) to snorkel on Saturday, August 19. We will meet at the Lowes parking lot in Estero in the Northeast corner at 9:30 AM to carpool and leave no later than 10:00 AM. Bring your own gear. Snorkel gear, sunscreen, towels, beach chairs, etc. We will stop for lunch at Margaritaville (1111 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL 33019). Please RSVP in this thread so we know who to expect. There may be strong current and strong swimming skills are advised to swim out to snorkel.
